How to use the Data Storage Converter

Why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB

Storage has two counting systems. Manufacturers use decimal, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems traditionally count in binary, where 1 GB really means 1 GiB, which is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The gap compounds with size: a decimal terabyte is only 931 binary gigabytes, which is the missing space people search for. Nothing is lost; the units simply differ.

The ladder of units

Each step is 1,024 in binary or 1,000 in decimal: bytes to kilobytes to megabytes to gigabytes to terabytes. Practical anchors: a photo runs 2 to 5 MB, an hour of streamed HD video around 3 GB, and a smartphone backup tens of gigabytes. Also mind bits versus bytes: internet speeds are megabits per second, and 100 Mbps downloads at only 12.5 megabytes per second.
