What an IBAN is and how validation works
An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) identifies a bank account for international transfers. It starts with a two-letter country code, followed by two check digits, then the domestic account details. Validation uses the mod-97 checksum defined in the ISO 13616 standard: the check digits are calculated from the entire number, so a single mistyped character makes the whole IBAN invalid.
