PNG to WebP with transparency intact

The most common worry when converting PNG is losing the transparent background. WebP fully supports an alpha channel, so logos, icons and cut-out product images keep their transparency after conversion. The gain is size: WebP stores the same transparent graphic in a dramatically smaller file, often 60 to 80 percent smaller than the PNG, because PNG compression is old and inefficient for anything beyond simple graphics.

Lossless or lossy: which to pick

WebP can compress two ways. Lossless mode keeps every pixel identical to the PNG and still comes out around 25 percent smaller, which is right for logos and UI graphics where exactness matters. Lossy mode at high quality shrinks screenshots and detailed images far more, with differences the eye cannot see at normal size. For web use, lossy at quality 80 to 90 is almost always the better trade.
