12-hour vs 24-hour (military) time
12-hour format splits the day into two 12-hour halves marked AM and PM, which is common in the US, UK and much of everyday conversation. 24-hour format (also called military time) numbers the hours 00 to 23 straight through the day with no AM/PM label, which is standard in most of the world, in transport timetables, and in technical systems like logs and APIs. Noon is 12:00 PM or 12:00; midnight is 12:00 AM or 00:00 - the point that trips people up most often, since midnight isn't "0 AM" in everyday speech but is 00:00 in 24-hour time.
